What is Contract Converting?

Contract converting is a manufacturing process that transforms flexible materials, known as flexible material conversion, such as films, adhesives, foams, and specialty substrates into custom-engineered components used in end products across industries like medical devices, aerospace, automotive, electronics, and industrial equipment.

This process involves a combination of precision techniques including film extrusion, die cutting, laminating, slitting, laser cutting, and adhesive coating, to meet exact design, tolerance, and regulatory requirements. A contract converter works closely with OEMs to turn raw materials into functional parts.

By outsourcing custom manufacturing solutions requirements to a contract converting partner, companies gain access to technical expertise, equipment technology, and scalable production allowing for faster product development, improved quality control, and reduced supply chain complexity.

Contract Converting Processes

Film Extrusion: The transformation of raw polymer resins into thin films through controlled heating and forming processes. This capability allows for custom thickness, surface properties, and material characteristics tailored to end-use applications.

Die Cutting: Precision cutting of materials into exact shapes, dimensions, and configurations using custom designed dies. This process enables the creation of complex geometries, tight tolerances, and intricate patterns that meet specific application requirements.

Laser Cutting: Non-contact cutting using focused laser beams for intricate patterns and clean edges.

Adhesive Coating: The precise application of adhesive materials to substrates, creating bonding solutions with controlled tack levels, adhesion properties, and release characteristics. This process enables the production of tapes, labels, medical adhesives, and assembly components.

Laminating: The process of bonding multiple layers of materials together to create composite structures with enhanced properties.

Slitting: Precision cutting of wide materials into narrower widths with tight tolerance control.
